FROM ORIGINS TO ORIGINAL. Romulo Royo & Luis Royo

 FROM JUNE 20th TO SEPTEMBER 20th 2024

GRAND OPENING THURSDAY 11th OF JULY AT 19.00h

Laberinto Gris presents our newest exhibition that delves into the creative process of the artists Romulo Royo & Luis Royo.

From Origins to Original is the motto of this exhibition, whose main premise is to show what emerges as the germ of a work and its final result.

Through different media and techniques, the artists are able to capture their work in different works that show the evolution of an idea until its final materialization.

FROM ORIGINS TO ORIGINAL

The birth of an idea

What is behind a work of art? How deep is the creative process? These and other questions are the ones we want to answer with this exhibition. Every artist consumes information, whether it is primary, his own, or secondary, through books, other works, existing elements, etc. However, both ways require a creative process to be materialized.

Romulo Royo and Luis Royo work their works exhaustively until they reach the final result, those pieces that become icons or referents of the artists themselves. However, behind them and through this process we mentioned, there are numerous drawings, pencils, sketches or even complete works that have served as a previous exercise. All of them are able to establish a dialogue among themselves and let us see what the artist had planned at the beginning and what has changed.

FROM ORIGINS TO ORIGINAL

The relevance of the preliminary work

The preliminary work became especially important during the 80's and 90's, becoming small final works with miniature details that could almost be similar to those in the miniated books.

These preliminaries were sent to publishing houses in the United States and Europe who commissioned Luis Royo to create the covers of their books.

Filled with annotations on tracing paper that covered the preview, they arrived by mail back to the artist's studio with all the corrections to be taken into account before executing the final illustration.

FROM ORIGINS TO ORIGINAL

A pile of sketches

During the creative process of the artists, many sketches, studies and sketches are made which, in the case of Luis Royo, are usually smaller, on tracing paper and are piled up in his studio as he makes the final works.

After some time, preparing a book or simply pretending to collect the study, all these sketches are rescued after having lived a long period in the artist's studio.

This is why we can find sketches dated after the original work, as the artist gave each sketch a final touch before taking it out of the studio.

The final work: purification of fantasy

Many of the preliminaries are sketches or pencils, drawings that only with graphite outline an idea that makes sense as it is worked on.

Everything reaches a more impressive meaning in the final work, where all those strokes and lines come together to form, under the luminosity of the applied colors, a completely new world that stimulates the imagination of each person who comes to see it. Everything influences the discourse that shapes the fantasy.

FROM ORIGINS TO ORIGINAL

The original becomes the origin

In some cases, the final work has served as inspiration for the artist himself to make new works, as is the case of the collaborations that both Romulo Royo and Luis Royo have made with Yamato Figures (USA) or Nocturna Models.

The final work becomes the origin, the origin of a new piece for which the creative process must begin again. New ideas, questions, sketches and discards pile up again, discarding the idea of the creative process as something linear, which begins with a preview and ends with the final work, and giving it a new circular form, in which the final work becomes the beginning of a new project.
