In one of the best-known episodes of the story The Judgment of Paris, Eris, the goddess of discord, upset at not having been invited, appears at Peleus's wedding, and leaves a golden apple with the phrase "for the most beautiful". Three of the goddesses present, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite fight over the apple, so Zeus chooses the shepherd prince of Troy, Paris, as judge to settle the dispute.
