The story begins when the famous magician John Zatara, member of the Star Squadron, meets Sindella, a beautiful woman belonging to the mystical race Homo Magi. He falls in love and has a daughter they call Zatanna. Shortly after the baby is born, the mother mysteriously disappears, and it seems she is dead. When he reaches adolescence, Zatanna learns from his father the secrets of illusionism and begins to collaborate in his shows, ignoring the superheroic past of Zatara.
One night, when he returns from one of his performances, Zatanna discovers that his father has disappeared. He begins to stir papers and finds an old notebook inherited from Leonardo Da Vinci himself (ancestor of the family), and a diary of the father who reveals his days as a defender of justice and the fact that, thanks to the old book, Zatara could do "true magic" by spelling the spells backwards. Fascinated, she suspects that she could also perform acts of real magic, utters a spell backwards and manages to ignite with her words the fire in the fireplace. When he recovers from the surprise, he decides to use his new powers to find his father, without suspecting that the task will take her several years.
