He recalled the first trip across the ocean. The first time he saw New York. Flying over it. The impression of its faded and gloomy skyscrapers. Left behind was old Europe, especially Paris, where he spent his first years. That ghostly Paris of uninhabited streets, of sullen people swirling around Montmartre.
Also the superhuman effort to make his childhood look normal.
