"The main hall of the public library was silent. Light filtered through its large, filthy windows. The sudden echo of approaching footsteps made the elderly librarians look up. Hermes and Judith had spent half their lives behind the sturdy mahgany counter that welcomed visitors to the stacks. They remained even though the library had been officially closed for years.
That decaying building had not collapsed thanks to them, Mr. Bowlling, a retired former police chief who did the work of security guard, and Lorrie, his shy filing cabinet, a young woman with eyes always soaked by an irrational fear "
